Cardinal Prevost was elected pontiff on the second day of the conclave, becoming leader of 1.4 billion Roman Catholics. He took the papal name Leo XIV, and greeted his new followers by saying, “Peace be with all of you.” Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, he was ordained on June 19, 1982. On September 23, 2023, Pope Francis made him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. He spent much of his life outside the United States, most recently as Cardinal-Bishop of Albano.
